With spring just around the corner, now is a great time to have good look at your living space and to think of a few ways of improving it. These ideas will freshen up and breathe new life into a tired room or perhaps give you a foundation for decorating and furnishing a renovated room from scratch.
The starting point is to map out your living room and clearly identify your goals for the space.

For instance, an L-shaped arrangement is great if you want to include two or three different activity areas or zones. The room could be adapted quite easily for dining, for conversation and for watching TV. An effective seating plan invites engagement and conversation and inspires spontaneity. Each activity could have its own area but you could design the room as a whole so these areas blend together visually and expand the perceived space. It is best to keep seating low and avoid heavy upholstery and make good use of sideboards and nested coffee tables to increase surface area when you need it.
If the main focus of your living space is entertainment it is a good idea to have a few lightweight chairs which may be easily moved to supplement your sofas. Provide small tables - pine coffee tables are ideal - for guests to place their food and drink on. Take control of the lighting by placing softer decorative lights in areas where they can be adjusted to illuminate different areas of the room. A small dining table may also double up as a temporary desk or display space.
When you are selecting your sofa, try and aim for some neutrality in its color scheme. You can easily then change the whole appearance and mood of a room by changing colour accents with different coloured cushions and throws. Make sure that comfort is your first priority - it does not matter how smart a sofa looks if you are not going to sit in it.
Change the colour scheme of your room, but keep the main scheme fairly light and neutral. Deeper hues can be used to provide some colour accents to lift the atmosphere. This is another reason why it is a good idea to keep much of your furniture in neutral tones and light wood. Oak and pine furniture is ideal for allowing you to quickly change the whole appearance of a room as they tend to suit a wide range of colour schemes. Their natural lightness also helps the room feel larger.
How about adding a rug? This is a great way to breathe some life into a familiar space and can be used to complement the coloured cushions and wall accents. If you are clever with the lighting you can change the mood of different parts of the room quite easily.
A great living space make everyone feel comfortable and at their ease. Laughter and conversation fills the room and people will enjoy relaxing in the company of others. It just takes a little thought about what you could do to improve the spaces in your own home.
